EVENTS CALENDAR FOR MARCH 2008

McDowell County North Carolina Mountains

March 1, 2008 - Skulls, skins and mounts. Join a park ranger in a discussion about skulls, skins and mounts of animals found at the park. Several skulls, skins and mounts will be displayed. Meet at the park office at 10am; free. Lake James State Park, Marion. For more information, call 828-652-5047.

March 8, 2008 - Spring Open House at Turtle Island Pottery in Old Fort. A full house of art pottery, including guests Banyan Tree Pottery and Grove Hill Pottery. Atcha Turner from Banyan Tree Pottery will also be cooking Thai food for patrons to sample. Turtle Island Pottery is 2 1/2 miles south of I-40 off exit 73. March 15, 2008 - Predators of the Park. Come discuss predators of the area with park rangers. There will be animal mounts on display for public viewing. Meet at the park office at 2pm; free. Lake James State Park, Marion. For more information, call 828-652-5047.
March 15, 2008 - Birds of the Woods. Enjoy a slide presentation followed by a short hike on one of the park’s trails. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Meet at the park office at 10am; free. L

March 28, 2008 - Soup in a Bowl. For a donation of $20, participants receive a beautiful handmade bowl to keep after enjoying a delicious lunch of soup, salad, cornbread, drink and dessert. You don’t want to miss this “green” extravaganza on Friday, March 28, 50 S. Main Street, Historic Downtown Marion – Seating at 11:00 OR 1:00 – stop by MACA for tickets or call 652-8610 for more information!

March 29, 2008 - Walking the Wetlands. Enjoy a hike through the wetlands of the park’s river section area, which used to be the Catawba River before the lake was created. Also discuss plant and animal life found in the area. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Meet at the park office at 10am; free. Lake James State Park, Marion. ON-GOING EVENTS

March 3rd, 2008
The Carolina Mountains: Photography of Margaret Morley presented by the North Carolina Museum of History and the Mountain Gateway Museum & Heritage Center. Photographs feature an intimate look at everyday life in western North Carolina around the turn of the 20th century. Exhibited photographs displayed at Mountain Gateway Museum, Old Fort Train Station, Museum & Visitor’s Center, the Marion Davis Branch of McDowell County Public Library and Catawba Vale Coffee Cafe all located in Old Fort.
